How to Do an Effective Movie Analysis

Author: fredriklonn5

When it comes to doing a movie analysis, there are far more features than you would imagine. There is much more detail that goes into a film analysis as oppose to just picking out certain features in the movie. If you want to create an effective analysis of a film, you have to be willing to devote a good amount of time into every minute detail.

Prior to watching the movie, you want to read over the brief synopsis so you know what to expect. This will give you a basis for what the movie is about, who is in it, and where you can expect to see the movie going. While the synopsis will not really affect your overall analysis, it will let you know what to look for going into the movie.

As you begin watching the movie, you want to analyze each shot and each scene. Every time the camera changes to a different angle or a different scene, you want to analyze the scene. Most shots nowadays will last no longer than 15 to 20 seconds. While it may seem monotonous and tedious, this is how you can perform an effective film analysis.

As you analyze each shot, there are several different features you want to focus on. The plot is certainly the first thing you want to pay close attention to. Look at what is going on, who the characters are and what their roles are for each scene.

The next thing you want to pay attention to is any effects the movie uses. This can be everything from shadows to 3-D images that stand out. These kinds of effects can have a huge impact on the movie and each particular scene.

Another facet of the movie that can affect each scene is the camera angles. It is common for movies to have a scene shot from above the action or at ground level. In addition, many movies will have the camera pan right or left to follow what is going on in the scene. This helps you grasp what is happening.

The last part to your movie analysis is giving the movie a rating. You can do this by giving it a number out of 10, by giving it a certain number of stars out of 5 or giving it two thumbs up. The rating will help others get a basis for how good the movie was and whether it is worth seeing or not.

There are a number of reasons why someone may do a film analysis. Whether it is to help others out or simply to better understand a movie, analyzing movies can do a lot to help you understand the movie.
